Erdogan threatens a new military operation in Syria
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan threatened a new military operation in Syria on Saturday if the Kurdish militias do not withdraw from the north of the Arab country.
“If we destroy a terrorist corridor that they wanted to build along our borders, we show that our Syrian brothers are not alone. The terrorist zones that still exist in Syria must be cleared up as promised, otherwise we will do it ourselves,” warned Erdogan a video conference on the occasion of the opening of a reservoir in the Turkish province of Hatay.
There the Turkish leader described as “unacceptable” any action that “leads to a new humanitarian catastrophe in Idlib”.
In October 2019, Turkey launched Operation Peace Spring in north-eastern Syria with the aim of evicting Kurdish militias from its border and creating a “safe zone” for receiving the thousands of Syrian refugees who remain in its area.
